The main types of automatic litter box

  1. Rotating globe or drum (Litter-Robot, PETKIT Purobot, PetSafe SmartSpin and OpenSky, PetPivot AutoScooper). The chamber turns to sift clumps out of clean litter and drop them into a sealed drawer or bin. These usually need clumping litter (the SmartSpin is the exception: PetSafe says it works with any litter).
  2. Rake with disposable crystal trays (PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Classic, Crystal Plus and Crystal Pro). The box rakes waste automatically, and crystal litter dehydrates it. You throw out the whole tray when it’s used up. The box costs less up front, but you keep buying trays.

What to check before you buy

1. Your cat’s weight (and your smallest cat’s weight)

Weight sensors decide when a cycle starts. The published ranges are: Litter-Robot EVO 3–19 lb, PETKIT Purobot 3.3–22 lb, Litter-Robot 4 3–25 lb, PetSafe SmartSpin up to 25 lb, Litter-Robot 5 3–30 lb, and PetSafe OpenSky up to 33 lb. For kittens under about 3 lb, the brands recommend semi-automatic or manual use, or say they don’t recommend the box at all.

2. How many cats you have

Litter-Robot lists up to 4 cats for the Litter-Robot 4, up to 5 for the Litter-Robot 5 and up to 2 for the EVO. If you want per-cat health data in a multi-cat home, look at camera models like the Litter-Robot 5 Pro or PETKIT Purobot Max Pro 2.

3. Floor space and entry size

The Litter-Robot 4 and 5 both need a 22” x 27” footprint, and the EVO needs 20.6” x 24.3”. Check the entry size too if your cat is large or older. PETKIT says the Max Pro 2’s entry is 43% larger than the previous model’s.

4. The litter you’ll use

Switching litter as well as the box is two changes at once for your cat. Litter-Robot recommends clumping clay. PetSafe’s crystal models use their own trays. The SmartSpin is sold as working with any litter.

5. Subscriptions and ongoing costs

  • Whisker+ unlocks extra history and, on the Litter-Robot 5 Pro, AI facial recognition.
  • PETKIT Care+ unlocks a 30-day video history.
  • Liners, carbon filters (Litter-Robot suggests replacing them every 2–4 weeks), waste bags and crystal refill trays all add up over the years you own the box.

6. Return window and warranty

Some cats take days or weeks to accept a new box. Litter-Robot offers a 90-day in-home trial, PetSafe a 45-day return and PetPivot (AutoScooper 12 Lite) a 30-day return from delivery. Read each policy for who pays return shipping.

7. Wi-Fi and region

The PETKIT and PetSafe apps need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Litter-Robot notes the 5 Pro isn’t compatible with the Whisker app outside the US.

Helping your cat switch

These tips come from Litter-Robot’s own guidance, and they apply to most automatic boxes:

  • Put the new box where the old one was, and keep both nearby for a while.
  • Mix in a cup of used litter for a familiar scent.
  • Leave the unit switched off until your cat has tried it, then turn on automatic cleaning. Litter-Robot lets you delay the cycle by up to 30 minutes for nervous cats.

FAQ

Are automatic litter boxes safe? The brands describe safety sensors: weight and laser sensors (Litter-Robot), 12 sensors and an anti-pinch structure (PETKIT, Purobot Max 3) and safety sensors that stop the box cleaning while a cat is inside (PetSafe). Follow each brand’s minimum-weight guidance for kittens, and supervise at first.

Do I still have to clean anything? Yes. You empty the waste drawer or bin, replace liners and filters, and do a full clean now and then. How often depends on the model and how many cats you have.

Is a cheaper model worth it? It can be, especially for one cat. Compare the total cost, including trays, liners and subscriptions, not just the sticker price.

How we put this guide together

We have not run hands-on tests of these litter boxes. This guide compares what each brand publishes: cat weight limits, size, litter type, waste capacity, app features, subscriptions and return policies, and explains which of those things matter for your home. Our picks match a published spec to a common need. Every fact links to its source below. If we test a model in the future, we’ll say so clearly and add what we found. More detail: How we research.
